Surface finishing and food-contact compliance
Powder coating, chrome plating and electropolishing — plus the food-contact testing route that decides which finishes are acceptable in which market.
Process steps
- 01Pre-treatment (degrease, pickling, rinse)
- 02Powder coating or electroplating
- 03Cure / passivation
- 04Appearance and adhesion check
- 05Salt-spray and food-contact sampling as required
Process data
- Powder coating
- Any RAL tone, matte or gloss
- Plating
- Chrome, nickel
- Salt-spray performance
- TBD — confirm with engineering
- Food-contact testing
- Third-party, per destination market
Finish is not a cosmetic choice. On a kitchen product it determines which markets you can sell into, because food-contact regulations restrict what may come into contact with food.
Finish and market are linked
| Market | Food-contact route | Effect on finish |
|---|---|---|
| North America | FDA 21 CFR | Coating and plating must be on the accepted list |
| European Union | EU 1935/2004 | Migrations limits apply per material |
| Germany | LFGB additionally | Stricter migration testing in practice |
This is why we ask for the destination market before tooling: a finish that is fine for one market may require retesting for another.
